Lower Cholesterol with Soy Products

Preventing disease and lowering the cost of healthcare has become a hot topic among most American people. The #1 health problem in the western world is heart disease and most people seem to prefer to take a drug rather than change their diet to reduce the effects of bad cholesterol. A powerful cholesterol-lowering effect can be achieved by following a low-fat diet that includes three portions of soy-based foods daily plus oats, red kidney, butter beans and a handful of almonds. This style of eating, known as the portfolio diet, has been proven to reduce bad cholesterol by more than 30 per cent, which is comparable to cholesterol- lowering statin drugs.

There is much to be learned from people in other parts of the world where Heart disease has less impact. Traditional Asian soy foods such as tofu, tempeh, and miso have been a dietary staple in that part of the world for centuries, and they are increasingly found in Western diets. Western food manufacturers have also developed a slew of new soy foods, using these little beige beans as an ingredient in protein powders, hot dogs, burgers, cheese, cereals, sports bars, and other convenience foods. Soy milk and texturized soy protein have been touted as nutritious alternatives to cow's milk products and meat. Supplement companies create pills from soy phytochemicals and advertise them as natural remedies for relief of menopause or as protection against cancer, heart disease, or osteoporosis. Soy powders are sold as supposedly healthy meal alternatives.

For some women, soy can also have a positive impact on PMS. Premenstrual problems can worsen for many women as they enter perimenopause and monthly hormonal cycles take on a more erratic pattern. PMS symptoms that may increase in perimenopause include irritability and other mood changes, breast tenderness, and headaches. Research is still being done on this subject yet thousands of women are proclaiming these foods are having positive effects on their health. These foods in addition to eating a wide variety of alkaline foods can greatly improve the health situation of most women. EAT YOUR VEGGIES!

Soy Reduces Risk of Cancer

One of the reasons thai i endorse a high alkaline diet is that it will help reduce the risk of a variety of cancers. Doctors have said for years to greatly increase your consumption of vegetables and fruits to cut your risk of developing cancer. Recently i have discovered soy and have been adding it to my diet as a plant source of protein. I have been very intrigued by its effects on cancer cell growth.

Women, especially over-50s, who eat a lot of soy can "significantly" cut their risk of developing the disease, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Dietary researchers who studied the diet and health of 68,412 women aged 40-70 concluded: "After adjustment for age, birth calendar year and total energy intake, consumption of soy foods was significantly associated with a decreased risk of colorectal cancer. We found that risk of colorectal cancer decreased with increasing soy food intake, primarily among postmenopausal women."

The most recent findings may help explain why so many fewer people in asian countries such as China and Japan, where soy is a major part of their diet, develop bowel cancer compared with Western countries, where soy consumption is extremely low. Soybeans are often eaten whole as part of a meal and soy is also used as an alternative to dairy in products such as milk, yogurt and cream cheese. Researchers have also linked soy with helping to reduce levels of cholesterol.

Soy protein contains many essential nutrients. Medical researchers have stated for years that populations who regularly include soy protein in their diets and reduce meat intake are at less risk of developing cancer, especially breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. The basic understanding about soy is that regular dietary intake reduces the risk of a variety of cancers, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. Eat a diet high in alkaline foods
